Video: Summary of contributions to the UN Consultation on Human Rights and mental health

On 14 and 15 May MHE participated in the consultation event ‘Identifying strategies to promote human rights in mental health’, organised by the United Nations Human Rights Council. The consultation aimed to share practices and experiences on how to move towards a human rights based approach to mental health.

At the opening session, representatives of the UN agencies highlighted the key areas of concern. Together with others, MHE board member Kristijan Grđan spoke out against the draft Additional Protocol to the Oviedo Convention. Read more HERE.

At the fourth panel on ‘Improving practices to combat discrimination, stigma, violence, coercion and abuse’, MHE highlighted its Mapping Exclusion report and reiterated its central recommendation: European states must adopt policies which aim to immediately reduce coercion in mental health services. As part of this project, MHE also mentioned its ongoing work on cross-national scoping and research into alternatives to coercion. MHE invited all participants at the event to share experiences and examples of good practise.
