Bloomfield Health Services in a few lines? 

Bloomfield Mental Health Services has been a charity in Ireland for over 200 years. Originating in 1812 as a place of retreat for people who had severe and enduring mental health issues since, Bloomfield has provided treatment and continuing care for individuals with complex mental health problems ever since. These include severe and enduring issues such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Diseases (HD).  We are the only organisation in Ireland providing multi-disciplinary services and care for individuals with HD – one of the most devastating neurological conditions known to man.

What are Bloomfield Health Services’ main activities ?

We are proud of the fact that we exist to serve people who are living with the most challenging and complex mental health needs.  Living with mental health issues is not easy and it is our purpose at Bloomfield to support people to truly live life, responding to their needs, wants and dreams.

We provide accommodation-based services for 150 people between our Hospital and Nursing Home facilities to patients and residents from all over the island of Ireland – both North and South. Ourusers’ ages range from their mid-20s to over 100 years old.

Whilst our residential based services are important to our service users and to us, providing crucial services to people in very complex need, over time we have been hampered by an inability to support people to move from a hospital setting into the community.  Sadly, this is a national issue and in 2018, supported by the national Health Service Executive (HSE) we opened Ireland’s first dedicated Specialist Rehabilitation Unit (SRU) to provide intensive rehabilitation services to adults who have often spent many years in other acute mental health facilities. This new service helps provide patients with the necessary skills and coping mechanisms to live rich and fulfilling lives in their own communities.

Led by a dedicated multi-disciplinary team, including peer support workers, Bloomfield remains one of only two organisations in the country providing a Specialised Rehabilitation Unit (SRU).
