What are the UPK’s main activities ?

The UPK Basel offers a full range of stationary, ambulant and semi-residential services for adults, adolescents and children of a present-day university psychiatric clinic. We offer in- and outpatient services for all patients with mental ill health.

The UPK consists of 4 departments, specializing on

  1. General adult psychiatry
  2. Childhood and adolescent psychiatry
  3. Forensic psychiatry
  4. Private psychiatry (2 private wards)

The UPK researchers work on a wide range of research projects related to mental health. As such, the UPK connects science and clinical application.

What are the UPK’s main priorities ?

  • Open Door Policy: The UPK Basel are open psychiatric clinics. 90 percent of the patients are here by choice. 1300 employees from 42 nations work together in interdisciplinary teams for the benefit of our patients. We follow an open door policy to reduce the frequency of coercive measures, and the stigma connected with psychiatry and mental ill health.
  • Research: Our therapies are driven by the latest scientific findings, always focused on the patient and his or her personal concerns. Due to the close collaboration with the University of Basel, the UPK Basel has a strong record in research. Many of our practical therapies have been evolved here, especially in psychotherapy.
  • Quality: The UPK attaches great importance to quality-assuring measures which is why UPK Basel profoundly relies on the model of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM). The results of various measurements help them make steady improvements not only to the satisfaction of patients but also of employees.
